First-Rate Training! Advanced music skills taught by Portland Boychoir include music literacy, ear training, healthy and robust vocal production, singing in harmony, and stage presence. Enrollment is limited in order to maintain small class sizes, a low student to teacher ratio, and a high-quality learning opportunity. All choirs are trained and directed by our dynamic Artistic Director, Dr. David York.
Boys! While holding high standards of respect and rehearsal decorum, Portland Boychoir understands and celebrates the learning style of boys. When boys sing with boys, they flourish!
Travel! Portland Boychoir’s bi-annual tours include trips to Arizona, California, Washington, the Oregon Coast, and New York City where they performed with Sir John Rutter at Carnegie Hall. In 2012, Portland Boychoir toured the NW region, singing in six cities (Hood River, Richland, Spokane, Coeur d’Alene, Seattle and Longview) over eight days. In 2014, Portland Boychoir toured to Italy, performing in St. Peter’s Basilica at the Vatican as well as other venues in Rome, Florence and Venice. In 2016, Portland Boychoir toured to Arizona, performing in Tucson with the Tucson Boys Chorus, Phoenix with the Phoenix Boys Choir, and a solo concert at the Grand Canyon. Upcoming tours include the Oregon Coast and San Francisco.
Fantastic Performance Opportunities! In addition to our regular concert series, Portland Boychoir has collaborated with many high-profile artists including Pink Martini, Michael Allen Harrison, Portland Gay Men’s Chorus, Bells of the Cascades, Daniel Nahmod, Portland Chamber Orchestra, Revalia Estonian Young Men’s Chorus, Phoenix Boychoir, and Matsiko World Orphan Choir to name a few.
Camp! The Advanced Choir attends annual music camp where they take their musical skills to a higher level, deepen the group’s camaraderie, and experience an exhilarating form of team work through the physical, social, musical, and intellectual thrill of playing handbells.
Auditions take place in a fun, low-stress environment. Invitations to sing with the Primary Choir and the Intermediate Choir will be given to applicants who demonstrate the ability to sing accurately in tune. Candidates interested in singing with the Advanced Choir must have singing experience; music-reading skills are a plus.

Boys, ages 6
Year-round open enrollment is available to boys who love to sing. No prior group singing experience is required. Prospective singers should attend one rehearsal as our guest, participating fully in the class during which time they will be given opportunities to demonstrate the ability to match pitches and to produce a pleasant tone quality while singing with the whole group. The audition process is friendly and engaging. Results are communicated privately with the parents.
Boys, 7 and older
Boys 7 and older may audition at various times throughout the year. Qualified singers must demonstrate the ability to match pitch with a pleasant tone quality, or may be recommended by the director based on progress shown while singing in Primary Choir.
Boys in High School
High school singers with performing experience may audition for Ovation at various times throughout the season on a case-by-case basis. New singers may be added in order to maintain a balance of voice parts. Call 503-697-SING (503-697-7464) or send an email message to firstname.lastname@example.org to schedule a private audition.
